The problem

Every scan is interrupted to pick up a bottle, squeeze, put it down, re-apply — again and again. The interruption is small; the cumulative load is not.

  • Every scan is interrupted to pick up a bottle, squeeze, put it down, re-apply — again and again.
  • Sonography is already physically demanding: around two-thirds of sonographers report scanning in pain, and those doing more than 18 scans a day report the highest pain levels.² Every extra reach and grip adds to that load.
  • Gel bottles are handled by gloved hands between patients and refilled from bulk containers — a known infection-control concern.
  • Time lost to gel handling is time not spent scanning — across a full list, it adds up to patients not seen.

Our solution

A motorized, probe-integrated gel delivery system with a vibration-damping conduit (own patent filed) — and an intelligent control layer in development.

Features

What Gelect does

Intelligent dispensing

Usage-adaptive AI dispensing

In development

An on-device machine-learning model learns each operator's dispensing pattern by exam type (volume per application, frequency, timing) and automates gel ejection to match — the right amount, at the right moment, without a button press.

Orientation check before ejection

In development

A 6-axis inertial measurement unit (3-axis accelerometer + 3-axis gyroscope) in the probe housing confirms the transducer face is oriented toward the patient and the probe is near-stationary before any gel is released. If the probe is tilted away, raised, or moving fast, ejection is blocked — no gel sprayed into the air or onto equipment.

Programmable ejection patterns

In development

A precision micro-pump driven by pulse-width-controlled motor output delivers metered volumes in selectable patterns (point, line, spread) suited to the exam region.

Bactericidal protection

In development

A sealed reservoir, a one-way check valve at the nozzle to prevent backflow of contaminated gel into the system, and UV-C LED disinfection cycles in the dispensing chamber between uses.

Multi-layer safety & support checks

In development

Reservoir-level sensing with low-gel alerts; clog and occlusion detection via motor-current monitoring; dry-run protection so the pump never runs empty.

Coupling-loss detection

Roadmap

Future integration with the scanner image feed to detect loss of acoustic coupling and dispense automatically.

How it works

How Gelect works

  1. Attach

The conduit mounts onto standard ultrasound probes.

  2. Dispense

A motorized unit delivers a controlled amount of gel at the probe tip.

  3. Scan

The vibration-damping conduit keeps delivery smooth without disturbing image quality.

Throughput

From 7 scans to 10

Every number below is a design target — not a measured result.

From 7 scans to 10
